Once you complete the Opera Singer Puzzle, you’re ready to get the first ingredient – the Black Witch Seed. In order to do that you need to complete the Cocoon puzzle in the Sewing Room along with the Book Puzzle in the Apothecary Room.

Cocoon Puzzle
Use the poison from the 5 Bottle Puzzle to kill each smaller cocoon and its attachment to the Chrysalis. Once they’re dead, you can click on the Chrysalis to add it to your inventory. This is the Black Witch Seed, the first ingredient.
That will then show a moth with symbols on it. In order to know what symbols matter, you need to complete the book puzzle.
Book Puzzle
For the Book Puzzle, you’ll need to find the 4 stray volumes. Two are in the sewing room and two are in the Apothecary. Add them to the shelf in the Apothecary, and realign the books so the spines make a pattern. Alternatively, you can follow the symbols at the top of this picture to put them in order.
When they’re in order, the symbols that are important will glow gold.
The highlighted symbols correspond to the symbols on the moth. Grab the pin cushion in the Sewing Room on the little cabinet and use a pin to mark the symbols highlighted by the books. Make sure there isn’t already a pin in one that shouldn’t have one (the moth starts with a few pins).
Once the moth is bleeding, the white moth below it will spread its wings and show you a symbol. This symbol is used on the box on the cabinet in the Sewing Room to get the key to the barn.
